History Of The Practice
Past, Present, and Future
Although Central Vermont Eye Care was incorporated in July of 2006, the origin of the practice began over 30 years ago.
Gordon R. Kelly, M.D. opened a solo ophthalmology practice on April 12, 1971 in a newly renovated office at 121 West Street in downtown Rutland. Three years later, Phil A. Aitken, M.D. joined the practice and worked there until June of 1976, when he moved to Burlington.
1976 was a year of change. The office was moved to 254 Stratton Road (across from Rutland Regional Medical Center), and Alexander T. Herzen, M.D. joined the practice later that same year. Dr. Kelly and Dr. Herzen incorporated their group and became known as Ophthalmologists, Inc.
Dr. Kelly and Dr. Herzen practiced ophthalmology together for over 30 years. They developed a close relationship with their patients and with the local community. During this time, they cared for thousands of patients, improving the quality of life for numerous local residents.
In October of 2005, Dr. Herzen retired from practice and moved to San Antonio, TX to be near his daughter and family. Praveen H. Keshava, M.D. joined the practice the following year. Dr. Keshava and Dr. Kelly worked side by side for several months until Dr. Kelly retired in December of 2006. Dr. Kelly still resides in Rutland.
The practice initially established by Dr. Kelly continues to grow. In order to accommodate new advances in the field and the increasing needs of the local community, Dr. Keshava and his team at Central Vermont Eye Care opened a new main office at 69 Allen Street in the summer of 2009. The new office is a modern state-of-the-art facility, incorporating the latest technologies for diagnosis and treatment of eye disease.
